Frozen Fingers

Aug 21, 2019

One of the most enjoyable photo shoots of the past few years for me has been an action and lifestyle shoot for a snowmobile apparel company named Arctiva that takes place in December. A little early for reliable snow reports, but necessary due to scheduling requirements for the catalog. Last year we moved our location from Colorado to Wyoming, both exciting and challenging. With a limited budget, we didn't have time to pre-scout, making it was more of a run and gun photoshoot. Adding to the ...

StarTrail Arch

May 20, 2019

Deep in Utah, ten miles down a teeth-rattling dirt road is a place called Devils Garden, quietly tucked against a sandstone wall is the beautiful Metate Arch. Unable to photograph it the first time because of bad weather, I've had this image kicking around in my head for the past few years. It was nice to return and make it a reality.Canon EOS 5dM3 - EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM @ 16mm - f4 - 4min - ISO800 50 images stacked for the star-trails, plus a few more for the foreground ...

Rampage

Nov 02, 2018

This year was the 13th edition of Redbull Rampage held in beautiful Virgin, Utah. Rampage is one of the yearly premier mountain bike freeride events, attracting some of the best riders from around the world. I drove down from Colorado for the third year hoping to capture some of the action on my camera. This year's new location provided new challenges not only for the riders but also for the photographers covering the event. The new site was challenging to get around with lots of steep cliffs, ...

Grays Peak

Oct 15, 2018

It’s no secret that I love bicycles and instantly fell in love with the Colorado Mountains from the moment I saw them on my move to this rad state. So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I thought carrying my mountain bike to the top of Colorado’s 9th highest peak was a decent idea. Gray’s Peak, at 14,270 feet is one of 50+ mountains rising above 14,000 feet from sea level, that are known by locals as 14ers. I’ve hiked and climbed up about half of ...

Spring Runoff

Jul 17, 2018

Every year in Colorado we have the spring runoff. The temperatures heat up during the day, melting the high mountain snow and flooding the rivers with ice-cold snowmelt. This is the time when local news anchors advise people to stay out of the floodwater for their safety. And this is the exact moment Colorado whitewater kayakers have been quietly waiting for all spring; a month-long window of whitewater bliss.  My phone rings and one glance at the caller id tells me it’s about ...

ColoRADo

Jun 11, 2015

ColoRADo from Don Karle Photography on Vimeo. For the past year I've spent most of my free time on the road photographing time-lapses around Colorado. Loading up the truck with gear and my dogs, sometimes with a spot in mind, sometimes just following my nose. It wasn't uncommon to return to locations multiple times trying to capture the landscape in its best conditions. The record for retuning to a spot is 6 times, never did capture the shot I ...

Dissembled

May 04, 2015

It started when I was a kid; taking things apart and sometimes managing to get them back together. The result was a closet cluttered with broken toys that I couldn’t get back together. As I got older, bicycles and motorcycles became my focus with a new caveat; they had to go back together or I wouldn’t have anything to ride. So it was only natural for me to take apart photography gear; always holding a camera and always curious about what was happening inside. It started ...

Cover Photo shoot with Tim Don

Apr 16, 2015

Recently I had the opportunity to photograph professional Ironman triathlete Tim Don for the UK magazine 220. I did my first cover shoot for 220 magazine 13 years ago and it's always fun working with them. I recently met Tim Don on a previous photoshoot and was excited to work with him again. He’s an amazing athlete, an awesome guy and easy to work with. I knew this was going to be a fun photo shoot. Matt, the editor of 220 magazine, was looking for cycling photos for the ...
